What sun and heat do to a vinyl floor

Vinyl plank is plastic on top and stone and plastic underneath. Like any plastic, it grows when it heats and shrinks when it cools. It also takes ultraviolet light, which is what fades color over time.

Makers say this plainly. One SPC install guide warns that prolonged direct sunlight may discolor the floor and that heat from the sun causes thermal expansion. Another SPC maker's warranty says prolonged direct sun can cause discoloration, and excessive temperatures can cause buckling or delamination. Buckling is when the floor has nowhere to expand and lifts into a hump, often at a doorway or along a wall of glass.

In a Florida home, the hot spots are predictable: in front of a west- or south-facing slider, under a bank of windows, and in a Florida room that isn't on the main AC.

What the warranties actually say

These are real clauses from rigid core vinyl documents. They show why you have to read the paperwork for the specific plank, not the category.

Is your Florida room indoors or three-season?

This is the first question to answer, because the documents treat the two very differently.

If the room is on the home's air conditioning and kept in the same range as the rest of the house, it's an interior room. Most install guides are fine with it, with the usual cautions about direct sun.

If the room has its own window unit that's off most of the time, or no AC at all, makers call it a three-season space. Some products allow it. One SPC line allows -25°F to 155°F after installation, another allows 0°F to 140°F. Others exclude any room not held in a set range. The wide allowances are for floating installs only; one guide states its three-season range does not apply to glue-down.

Makers don't all agree on method, either. One commercial SPC maker recommends its full-spread adhesive in areas hit by direct sunlight or temperature swings. The rule is the same either way: follow the documents for the plank you buy.

Installing at a sliding door

A sliding door is the hardest spot in most houses. The sun comes through low glass, the threshold is fixed, and it's usually the longest run of plank in the room. What a careful install looks like:

• A bigger expansion gap. One SPC guide calls for 1/4 inch normally and 5/8 inch where the floor will see temperatures above 85°F.
• Nothing that pins a floating floor down. No caulk, glue or nails through the planks at the door track. The floor has to move under the trim.
• A proper transition at the track rather than planks jammed tight against it.
• Plank direction that follows the room. One maker recommends running planks along the longest wall and parallel to the main light source.

Shade the glass, not just the floor

Every document we read points to the same fix: control the sun. The SPC install guides recommend drapes or blinds during peak sun hours. One commercial maker also recommends UV tinting on windows.

For a slider that gets afternoon sun, that can be as simple as closing a vertical blind from lunch until dinner. In a Florida room with glass on three sides, it may mean shades or a window film. It protects furniture too, not just the floor.

Remember that warranties treat sun damage as your responsibility. Shading the glass is the one step that protects both the floor and your coverage, because a faded or buckled strip in front of a slider is exactly what those exclusions describe.

When to pick something else

Be honest about the room. If it isn't air-conditioned, gets full sun most of the day and the product you like excludes three-season rooms, don't put that plank there. Either choose a vinyl product whose guide covers unconditioned sunrooms, run the room on the AC, or consider tile for that one space.
