Polk County: lake chains, ridge towns and a lot of new rooftops
Polk sits inland, but storms find it. In 2004 the centers of Charley, Frances and Jeanne all crossed the county within about six weeks. In 2022, Ian dropped nearly 17 inches of rain on Lake Wales, and a lakeside Davenport neighborhood sat in about three feet of water for months. Can vinyl plank go over the wood floor in our 1920s house near downtown?
Usually, if the subfloor is sound. A rigid plank shows every dip underneath, so the installer checks for soft spots, squeaks, sagging and door clearances first. If there's original wood you want to keep, say so at the measurement. The plank floats and isn't nailed or glued to it.
Can the plank go in a manufactured home in a 55+ park near Lake Wales?
Yes, as long as the wood under it is solid. A manufactured-home floor is wood over a frame and flexes more than a slab. The installer looks closely at the bathroom, the kitchen sink and the water heater closet, where slow leaks do their damage. The attached pad also makes those floors quieter underfoot.
