Can vinyl plank go in a Dixieland bungalow with a raised wood floor?
Usually, yes. A raised wood subfloor can take vinyl plank if it's solid and reasonably flat. Houses from the 1920s through the 1940s sometimes have soft boards, squeaks or old patches. The installer looks at all of that during the free measurement and tells you what, if anything, needs repair before the planks go down.
My house south of town has old ceramic tile. Does it have to come out first?
It depends on the tile. Vinyl plank can sometimes go over tile that's flat and firmly stuck down, with the grout lines filled. Cracked, hollow-sounding or loose tile has to come up. The installer checks the tile and the height at doorways and appliances at the measurement and tells you which way makes sense.
Will the floor feel hollow over the old wood subfloor in our bungalow?
A floating floor over wood feels a little different from one over concrete, but it shouldn't feel hollow if the subfloor is flat and firm. Most planks come with an attached pad that quiets footsteps. Squeaks come from the subfloor, not the plank, so they need fixing before the new floor goes in.
Our lakefront yard floods in heavy summer storms. Is vinyl plank enough protection?
Vinyl plank is waterproof, which means water won't swell or ruin the planks. It won't keep water out of the house, and water trapped underneath has to be dried out. If water ever gets inside, the area has to be fully dry before a new floor goes down. After that, the planks can be reinstalled or replaced as needed.
We have dogs that come in wet from the lake. Which wear layer should we choose?
Go with the 20-mil wear layer. It's the thickest option, it's made for homes with pets and heavy traffic, and over an SPC core it lasts 20+ years. A waterproof plank also means a dripping dog is a towel job, not a problem for the floor. Keep a mat at the door for the sand.
