Our house backs onto one of the lakes. Will vinyl plank hold up if the water comes up?
The planks themselves won't swell or come apart if they get wet, which is the difference from laminate and carpet. They can't stop water from getting into the house, though. If a room floods, it has to be dried out fully first, subfloor included. Then the floor can be put back, often using planks that were never damaged.
Is vinyl plank a good match for a 1920s house near downtown?
It can be. Older houses often have uneven wood subfloors or several layers of old flooring. Over a concrete slab, what matters is the moisture coming up through the slab, not how close the lake is. Many SPC planks come with an attached pad. The installer tests the slab at the measurement and tells you whether it needs a separate barrier. On a wood subfloor, the check is for soft or damp spots instead.
Can one floor run through every room of our newer open-plan house?
Usually, yes. Vinyl plank can run from the entry through the living room, kitchen and hallways without a change in color. Very long runs sometimes need an expansion break, depending on the maker's rules. The installer measures the rooms and tells you where, if anywhere, a transition strip is needed.
We spend weekends on the boat and track in sand and wet feet. Which plank is best?
Look at the 20-mil wear layer. It's the thickest one offered, it stands up to grit being ground in underfoot, and it lasts 20+ years over an SPC core. Water on the surface isn't a problem. Sand is what wears any floor down, so a good mat at the back door helps whichever plank you pick.
