What dog claws actually do to vinyl plank

Claws ride on the clear wear layer on top of the plank, not on the printed wood look underneath. Everyday trotting leaves fine surface marks that mostly show in low, raking light. A dog that digs at a door, or skids on a turn, can cut deeper.

Read the warranty before you assume claws are covered. One major maker's residential warranty says outright that gloss reduction, scratches and dents are not surface wear and are not covered. Another defines normal household use as excluding pet damage such as chewing, digging and clawing. A few pet-focused product lines do add scratch protection from domestic pets, so if claws are your main worry, ask which line you're looking at and read that clause.

Accidents: the plank is fine, the edges are the risk

Urine sitting on top of a vinyl plank doesn't soak into it. The risk is liquid that runs where the plank isn't: the seams, the 1/4 inch expansion gap at the walls, and the slab or pad underneath. One maker's waterproof warranty covers topical moisture only as long as the water does not flow over the edge of the surface, meaning the edge of the room or a cut board.

Pet stain warranties come with a condition. The three we read all say to clean the affected area right away, and one notes that the longer an accident sits, the harder it is to remove. None of them cover damage to the subfloor or the structure around the floor.

• Pick up solids, then blot liquid with paper towels. Don't spread it toward the wall.
• Wash the spot with a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner and rinse with clean water.
• For a stain that stays, one care guide's sequence is full-strength cleaner, then a 10:1 water-to-bleach dilution, then isopropyl alcohol, rinsing after each.

Slipping: the complaint you'll hear most

The complaint that comes up most on homeowner forums isn't scratches. It's the dog sliding. Vinyl is a smooth, sealed surface. Paws that gripped carpet fibers now meet a flat finish, and a running start ends in a skid.

Most of the fix is the dog, not the floor. The American Kennel Club notes that long nails can turn a sound paw into a splayed foot and reduce traction. Trimmed nails let the pads do the gripping. For older or unsteady dogs, the AKC suggests non-slip area rugs or inexpensive yoga mats along the routes the dog walks most, plus boots, grippy socks or toenail grips.

Pick rug backings with care. Rubber and latex backings can permanently stain vinyl. One maker explains the cause: the antioxidant chemicals those backings often contain. Look for a non-staining vinyl-backed mat or a woven, colorfast rug.

Entries take the grit. Sand tracked in from a Florida yard acts like sandpaper under paws and shoes. Makers ask for walk-off mats at every outside door, and one warranty spells out mats with both soft and firm fibers, cleaned weekly.

The feeding corner takes the water. A bowl that splashes a little every day puts water right where planks meet the baseboard. A washable, non-staining mat under the bowls keeps it on the surface.

Hallways take the running. Long straight runs are where dogs build speed and skid at the turn. A runner at the end of the hall does more than a rug in the middle of a room.

Choosing plank for a house with dogs

• Wear layer first. It's the part claws touch.
• Read the pet clause. Is it stains only, or stains and scratches? What does it ask of you?
