Why this question comes up so often in Florida

Plenty of Florida slab homes were built with tile. It's cool, it survives water, and it lasts. Many homeowners who lived with it for 20 years now want something different. They're tired of scrubbing grout, tile is hard on knees and hips, and a dropped glass shatters.

Vinyl plank, especially rigid SPC, fixed the old reasons not to use vinyl here. It doesn't swell when wet. So the choice is now about comfort, looks, sun and flood risk, not just water.

There's no single right answer for the whole house. Many owners end up with vinyl in the rooms they live in and tile left where it earns its keep. The rest of this guide goes through each factor so you can decide room by room.

Comfort, safety and noise

This is where vinyl plank wins clearly. A manufacturer that makes both says vinyl is nicer barefoot because it's warmer and softer, and that vinyl absorbs footstep noise while porcelain has no sound-reducing qualities at all. In an open-plan Florida house with high ceilings, that difference is noticeable.

Tile is also unforgiving. The same maker notes porcelain can chip at the edges and crack if something heavy is dropped. Anything dropped on it, including a coffee mug or a phone, is more likely to break. For people who are on their feet a lot at home, a softer surface is easier on the body.

Water and flooding

Both floors shrug off spills. Tile itself is waterproof, but the same manufacturer notes the grout needs sealing to stay that way. SPC planks lock tightly with no grout lines to seal.

Flooding is different. FEMA's Technical Bulletin 2 lists ceramic and porcelain tile set in mortar as acceptable flood-damage-resistant flooring. It rates vinyl tile set with chemical-set adhesive on concrete as acceptable too. Other vinyl applications, which include a floating click floor, don't get that rating. If your house is in a flood zone, glue-down vinyl or tile is the safer pick for the lowest floor.

Sun, heat and the lanai

Tile doesn't care about sunlight indoors. Vinyl does. One rigid core installation guide says direct sunlight can fade the planks or separate the joints, and tells owners to use window treatments or UV tint. One SPC maker's warranty excludes dimensional change from temperatures above 110 degrees and from direct sunlight.

So for an enclosed Florida room with walls of glass and no AC, or a sun-baked entry, tile is often the better call. For the rest of the house, blinds and UV film on the worst windows handle it.

Cost and time

Vinyl plank goes in faster. There's no mortar to cure and no grout to set, and most installs are completed in a single day once your materials arrive. Our estimate for vinyl plank is $5 to $12 per square foot installed, and a 200 sq ft room runs roughly $1,200 to $1,900 before discount.

A room-by-room way to decide

• Living room, family room, bedrooms: vinyl plank for comfort and quiet.
• Kitchen: vinyl plank if you stand there a lot; it's easier on legs and dropped dishes.
• Bathrooms and laundry: either works; vinyl means no grout to scrub.
• Unconditioned Florida room or sunny entry: tile, or vinyl only with good window protection.
• Lowest floor in a flood zone: tile set in mortar or glue-down vinyl, not floating.
