Bradenton runs along the south bank of the Manatee River, from the Riverwalk downtown out toward the bay. It has 100-year-old cottages, block ranch homes, newer subdivisions and a lot of houses that took on water in 2024.
Hurricane Helene never made landfall here, but in September 2024 it pushed what Manatee County officials called an unprecedented surge onto the mainland. The tide gauge at Port Manatee peaked a little over 6 feet above normal high water, far past the old record set by Idalia the year before. On Chauncey Avenue and other low streets near the water, homes took more than two feet of water inside and had to be gutted. The county rescued more than 300 residents that night. Hurricane Milton came ashore to the south two weeks later.
