Plant Street Side Streets to Horizon West Slabs
Winter Garden has two sides: an old citrus and railroad town along Plant Street and the West Orange Trail, and thousands of new homes spreading south through Horizon West.
Settlers came in the 1850s, and the Orange Belt Railroad, citrus, turpentine and lumber built the town. By 1900 a small business district had formed along Plant Street, with houses on the side streets around it. Winter Garden incorporated in 1908. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895 hit the groves hard, and back-to-back freezes in the 1980s finished off most of what was left. Fishing on Lake Apopka drew visitors from the 1920s until pollution collapsed it at the end of the 1960s.
Today the old rail line is the West Orange Trail, a 22-mile path that runs right through downtown past the Garden Theatre. The houses on the older streets near downtown are the ones most likely to have a wood subfloor, patched repairs or older flooring buried under newer layers. Plank can usually go in, but the installer checks what's underneath first.
South of town, it's a different job. Orange County adopted the Horizon West plan in 1995, and the area went from about 14,000 residents in 2010 to 58,101 in 2020. The city itself grew from 34,568 to 46,964 over the same ten years. Much of Horizon West uses Winter Garden addresses in the 34787 ZIP code. These are newer slab homes, and the flooring that comes out is usually builder carpet or low-end laminate that couldn't handle kids, pets or a pool towel.

Our house near downtown is one of the older ones. Can plank go over what's there?
Usually. If it's a wood subfloor, the installer checks for soft spots and squeaks. If there's old vinyl or tile, they check whether it's flat and bonded. Houses that have been worked on over many decades sometimes have floors at different heights from room to room, and those get evened out before the planks go down.
We just closed on a new build. Is it better to replace the floors before we move in?
If you can, yes. An empty house means no furniture to move and no one working around your schedule. If the builder's warranty covers the floors or the slab, check its terms first. Some owners live with the builder carpet for a year and then replace it; either way works.
We ride the West Orange Trail and bring bikes through the house. Will tires mark the floor?
Clean rubber tires on a rolling bike rarely do much. Grit and sand stuck in the tread scratch over time, the same as with shoes. A mat inside the door and a quick wipe of the tires go a long way. A 20-mil wear layer handles that kind of traffic better than thinner ones.
Our two-story has bedrooms upstairs. Is plank loud to walk on?
It's quieter than tile, and the attached pad takes some of the hollow sound out. Upstairs, the noise people notice most is footsteps heard from the room below. A better underlayment helps. Tell the installer which rooms matter most and they'll match the underlayment to what you want.
Will sun through big sliding doors fade the floor?
Many newer homes in Horizon West have large sliders facing the pool. Strong direct sun can fade or warm any floor over the years. Blinds or UV film on the hottest glass help a lot, and the installer can point you to products rated for sunny rooms.
