Mount Dora sits on a rise 184 feet above sea level, overlooking Lake Dora, with a downtown where the Lakeside Inn has taken guests since 1883. About a third of residents are 65 or older, and plenty of them want floors that are easy on the joints and easy to clean.

Newer Mount Dora looks different. Lakes of Mount Dora is a gated 55+ community started in 2006 and planned for around a thousand homes, with most homesites on the water. Water is the other local concern. In late October 2025 more than 17 inches of rain fell on Mount Dora. Part of Donnelly Street washed out, the city went under a boil-water notice, and on one street near the lake, mud and water ran through houses. Our house is in the historic district. Do we need permission to change the floors?
Historic district rules are set by the city, and we can't speak for them. If you're not sure what applies to your house, ask the city before you book. The floor itself doesn't alter the house much: the planks float over the existing subfloor and can come up later without damaging what's underneath.
Is vinyl plank easier on the knees than the tile in our 55+ home?
Yes. Tile over concrete has no give at all. Vinyl plank with an attached pad flexes slightly underfoot, and it's warmer to stand on in the kitchen. A textured plank grips better than glazed tile with a little water on it. Ask to see textured samples at the free measurement.
We had mud come in during the October 2025 storm. Can the new floor go in right away?
Not until the house is clean and completely dry, including the subfloor and the bottoms of the walls. That drying work comes first and isn't something we do. We rebuild the floor after. Then the installer checks the subfloor at the measurement, and next-day installation is available once materials arrive.
Will vinyl plank look out of place in an older house downtown?
Not if you pick the right look. Many wood-look planks copy the grain and width of older floors, and matte finishes look more natural than shiny ones in an older room. Bring photos of the rooms, or look at samples in your own light during the free measurement, which is the best way to judge.
Our sunroom faces the lake. Will the sun fade the floor?
Any floor can fade under years of strong direct sun, vinyl included. Blinds or UV film on big windows help, and so does moving rugs around now and then. Also check that the room stays within the temperature range the flooring maker lists, because a hot sunroom can get past it in summer.
The old floor squeaks. Will a rigid plank fix that?
No. Squeaks come from the subfloor, usually loose boards rubbing on nails or joists. A new floor on top won't stop them and can make them easier to notice. The installer finds the squeaks at the measurement, and they get fastened down before the planks go in.
