Rebuilding Floors in Hudson After Idalia and Helene
Hudson's coastal neighborhoods flooded in Hurricane Idalia in 2023 and again in Helene in 2024. Some homeowners replaced their floors twice in about a year. Inland, the golf communities have a different problem: floors that are simply old.

Hudson had some of the worst of it, with rescue crews taking boats door to door. Thirteen months later, Helene flooded the same neighborhoods. Bay News 9 talked with a Hudson homeowner whose new floors, put in after Idalia, were destroyed again.

Our home flooded in Helene. What has to happen before new floors go in?
The house has to be fully dried out first, including the slab and the lower walls. That's the water mitigation company's job, not ours. Once it's dry, the installer checks the slab with a moisture reading at the measurement. New flooring over a wet slab traps the moisture and causes mold and failures later.
Will vinyl plank survive the next storm surge?
No floor stops water from coming in. SPC plank won't swell or break down the way laminate does, but after a surge the floor often has to come up anyway so the slab can dry and be cleaned. The honest benefit is that the plank itself doesn't turn to mush, so it can take a wet mop and the occasional leak.
We're raising our house after the storms. Can vinyl plank go on the new floor?
