Ocoee started in the 1850s as a camp on the shore of Starke Lake and stayed small for a century. Then the highways came, and the town went from under 8,000 people in 1980 to more than 47,000 in 2020.
The first settler, Dr. J.D. Starke, moved his camp to a pine-wooded lake here to get away from malaria. The settlement took his name until 1886, when it was renamed Ocoee after a river in Tennessee. Captain Bluford Sims ran what is called the first commercial citrus nursery in the country here, shipping young trees to growers across Florida and California. Ocoee incorporated as a town in 1923.
Growth followed the roads. State Road 50 arrived in 1959, Florida's Turnpike in 1964, SR 408 in 1990 and SR 429 in 2000. Each one made Ocoee an easier commute to downtown Orlando and the theme parks. The population numbers show it: 1,370 people in 1950, 7,803 in 1980 and 47,295 in 2020. That means a large share of the houses here were built after 1980, and many of them still have the tile and carpet they came with.
The oldest part of town is getting new attention. Since the city's 2016 downtown master plan, Ocoee has spent more than $44 million on public spaces along the west shore of Starke Lake, the Lakeshore Center and new utilities and streetscape on Bluford Avenue. New townhome projects are in the works too, including an 84-townhome plan at Clarke Road and A.D. Mims Road.

Sometimes. If the tile is flat, firmly bonded and the added height works at your doors and cabinets, plank can float over it and you skip the demolition. Deep grout lines may need filling first. Cracked or hollow-sounding tile comes out. The installer taps and checks it at the free measurement.
