Our house near downtown is close to 100 years old. Will the floor be flat enough?
Maybe not everywhere, and that's normal for a house that age. Vinyl plank needs a reasonably flat base, so dips and humps get evened out first. Sometimes that's a little patching, sometimes new plywood over the old boards. The installer checks the floor and the door heights at the measurement and explains the options.
We're only here in the winter. What should we do with the house over the summer?
Keep the air conditioning running, set within the temperature range the flooring maker lists. A closed-up house in a Polk County summer gets very hot and very humid, and that's hard on anything inside it. Vinyl plank handles it far better than laminate or wood, but the maker's limits still apply.
The house took water during Ian. Can the new floor go straight over the old subfloor?
Only if the subfloor dried out completely and is still solid. Wood that sat wet can swell, delaminate or soften. Water removal isn't something we do; we rebuild floors once everything is dry. The installer checks the subfloor at the measurement and tells you whether any of it needs replacing first.
Is textured vinyl plank safer for older adults than the tile we have now?
A textured surface grips better than glazed tile, especially with a bit of water on it, and the attached pad makes it softer to stand on. It isn't a substitute for grab bars or mats. Ask to see textured samples at the free measurement and put a mat by the kitchen sink and the shower.
Is vinyl plank quieter than tile in a manufactured home?
