Summerfield's Golf Communities, 25 Years On
Summerfield sits along US 301 and US 27/441 just north of The Villages. Its big 55+ golf communities were built mostly in the 1990s and 2000s, so a lot of homes still have their original floors.
Before it was Summerfield, it was Whitesville, started after the Civil War by Charles H. White, who ran the post office and the first general store. In 1880 a landowner refused the railroad a right-of-way, so the line bypassed the town to the east. In 1888 the town was renamed for Colonel Adam G. Summer, a cattleman who arrived in 1856. Today the community sits near US 301 and County Road 475A in southern Marion County.
Most of the newer homes are in two large gated 55+ communities. Stonecrest, directly across US 27/441 from The Villages, has about 2,200 single-family homes built from 1990 onward around an 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole par 3. Spruce Creek Country Club has about 3,250 single-family homes built from 1996 to 2007, with 36 holes of golf. A third community, Spruce Creek South, has about 1,650 homes built between 1989 and 1995.
That puts a lot of Summerfield homes at 20 to 35 years old. The carpet has worn paths in it, and the tile has cracked grout or hollow spots.
