Marion County: horse farms, a brick-built downtown and big 55+ communities
Marion County has three very different kinds of floor jobs. Around downtown Ocala, which rebuilt in brick after an 1883 fire, the SE Historic District holds houses from the 1880s and 1890s. Homes that old usually sit on wood framing, and after a century the floors can slope, squeak or go soft near old plumbing. Can vinyl plank go in a barn apartment or farmhouse?
Yes, as long as the space is climate-controlled and the subfloor is sound. Horse properties bring grit in all day, and grit is what wears floors down. The 20-mil wear layer handles it for 20-plus years over SPC. Put mats at every door. The installer checks the room at the measurement.
Our Victorian near downtown Ocala has floors that slope. Can you fix that?
Some slope can be evened out with leveling over the subfloor. A bigger slope usually means settled piers or a weak joist, which needs a carpenter first. The installer tells you which it is at the free measurement, before any planks are ordered, so the repair can be done ahead of install day.
We're in a 55+ community and some tiles sound hollow. What does that mean?
Hollow tiles have lost their bond to the slab. They have to come up before a new floor goes over that area, or the plank will flex there. If the rest of the tile is flat and solid, plank can sometimes go over it. At the measurement, the installer taps across the floor to map the hollow ones.
Our gated community requires contractor access. How does that work?
Let the gate know the measurement date and the install date, and share any rules about work hours or parking. The installer works within them. Most installs are completed in a single day once your materials arrive, so the crew isn't coming and going for a week.
Our house is closed up all summer. Will the floor be fine?
A rigid SPC core won't swell in humid air, but the flooring maker sets a temperature range. Keep the air conditioning within it while you're away. The bigger risk is a slow leak nobody notices for months, so a water sensor and a neighbor who checks in are worth having.
How much does vinyl plank cost in Marion County?
