Lemon Bay Living and the Long Rebuild
Englewood sits on Lemon Bay and straddles the line between Sarasota and Charlotte counties, with Manasota Key across the water. In 2024 it was hit twice in two weeks, first by Helene's surge and then by Milton's.
Three brothers platted Englewood in 1896 and named it after their hometown, the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. They sold one-acre home lots and ten-acre grove lots, but freezes from 1894 to 1896 had already hurt the orange crops. Today the shops and restaurants sit mostly along West Dearborn Street, and Beach Road runs over the Tom Adams Bridge to Chadwick Park at Englewood Beach on Manasota Key. The population grew from about 14,900 in 2010 to 20,800 in 2020.
Manasota Key took some of the worst surge damage in Southwest Florida in 2024. Houses that flooded during Helene were destroyed by Milton two weeks later. Surge near the south end of the key was estimated at close to 10 feet, and sand piled up to the first floor of many homes.
