Winter Springs was the City of North Orlando until 1972, and much of it grew up around the Tuscawilla golf course that opened in the early 1970s.
The area was settled around 1865 as Tuskawilla. It incorporated in 1959 as the City of North Orlando and changed its name to Winter Springs in 1972, because it wasn't next to Orlando and the old name confused people. The city had 609 residents in 1960, 10,475 in 1980 and 38,342 in 2020. Most of the city's homes were built in the decades after that first jump.
Much of that growth was Tuscawilla. The Joe Lee-designed golf course dates to the early 1970s, and more than 3,000 homes went up around it from the 1970s through the early 2000s. It covers much of the city's western and central neighborhoods and reaches into Oviedo. Those houses are now twenty to fifty years old, and many are on their original tile or their second round of carpet.
Winter Springs also has water close by. During Hurricane Ian in 2022, crews rescued about 80 residents and 20 to 30 pets from rising water in neighborhoods near Hayes Road, Holiday Lane, Mockingbird Lane and Lido Road. Gee Creek runs behind Hacienda Village, a 55-plus manufactured-home community, and helped flood it. After Ian and Nicole, the city studied 46 areas and picked 12 priority flood spots, including Gee Creek, Lake Jesup, Soldiers Creek and Howell Creek, for a stormwater master plan.
