Valrico's 1980s Subdivisions, Forty Years On
Valrico's name means rich valley, and for most of its history it was groves and cotton fields east of Brandon. Today it's mostly subdivisions, and a big share of them went up in the 1980s building run around Bloomingdale Avenue.
The area was called Long Pond when it was a string of cotton plantations. In the 1880s William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor from Tufts College, renamed it Valrico. Growth stalled after the 1895 freeze and again after the 1929 crash. It picked up in the mid-1950s once SR 60 connected Valrico to Tampa's Adamo Drive. Even so, the 2000 census counted only 6,582 people. By 2020 it was 37,895.
Much of the housing south of SR 60 is in Bloomingdale, which straddles Valrico and Brandon. Building there began in 1979, and nearly 4,000 homes went up in the first ten years. Today it's 32 subdivisions and more than 5,300 homes. A lot of those houses are now 35 to 45 years old. Most have had the original carpet replaced once, and plenty still have the tile that went in when they were new.
That makes tile removal the usual first step here. Old tile comes up, the slab is scraped and leveled, and then the plank floats on top. It's louder and dustier than pulling carpet, so plan on being out of those rooms while the work is going on. Kitchens are the tricky room. If the cabinets were set on top of the old tile, that tile usually stays under them and the new floor meets it at the toe kick. The installer checks for that too, since it affects how the dishwasher fits.
Valrico sits at about 100 feet above sea level, so most homes are well away from surge. The Alafia River is the exception. After Hurricane Milton in October 2024, it flooded parts of Valrico, and residents near the river were told to evacuate. Upstream at Lithia it passed 23 feet, the highest there since 1933. For homes near the river, a waterproof floor is worth having.

Valrico Flooring Questions
Our Bloomingdale house still has its 1980s tile. Should we remove it or cover it?
It depends on the tile. If it's flat, solid and not cracked, a floating plank can sometimes go over it. Hollow or loose tiles have to come out, and removing it also avoids raising the floor at doors and cabinets. The installer checks the tile at the free measurement and tells you which way makes more sense.
How messy is tearing out old tile?
Messier than pulling carpet. Breaking up tile and scraping thinset is loud and dusty work. Clear the rooms being done and close off the rest of the house as well as you can. The installer will explain what to expect and how long that part of the job takes during the measurement.

The planks themselves are waterproof, and water that sits on top wipes up. Water that runs to the edges and stays there for a long time can reach the slab underneath, so dry up big puddles instead of leaving them. A mat at the pool door does most of the work.
Our living room is a step down from the rest of the house. Can the floor handle that?
Yes. The step gets a stair nosing that matches the plank, and each level is installed as its own area. The installer measures the step at the free measurement and shows you the trim options. Mention it if anyone in the house has trouble with steps, since that can affect which trim makes sense.
How long will our kitchen be out of use?
Most installs are completed in a single day once your materials arrive. If tile has to come out first or the slab needs leveling, it can take longer.
